I. Purpose and Objectives

Midocean University recognizes that academic freedom is an essential and fundamental pillar of academic excellence and the production of original knowledge. This policy reflects the University’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding the right of faculty members, researchers, and students to free thought and responsible academic expression within the digital environment in which the University fulfills its mission.

II. Scope

Permanent and contracted faculty members.
Graduate students in their research courses and theses.
Affiliated and visiting researchers at the University.

III. Definitions

Academic Freedom: The right of faculty members to teach, conduct research, and publish without external interference, within the framework of research ethics and established standards of sound academic practice.
Freedom of Teaching: The right of instructors to select teaching methods, organize course content, and determine their educational approach based on their academic expertise.
Freedom of Research: The right of researchers to determine their research questions, methodology, interpret their findings, and publish them without external restrictions.
Freedom of Academic Expression: The right of academics to participate in public dialogue and comment on issues related to their field of expertise.

IV. Core Policy Provisions

1. Freedom of Teaching

Faculty members shall have the freedom to design their courses, select their resources, and choose their teaching methods within the approved course description.
Educational content shall not be subject to prior review based on ideological or political considerations.
Critical and analytical teaching methods shall be encouraged and supported among faculty members.

2. Freedom of Scientific Research

The University shall safeguard researchers’ right to pursue research paths guided by evidence and academic requirements.
Researchers shall be protected when reaching findings that differ from prevailing concepts, provided that academic standards are met.
The University shall support publication initiatives in peer-reviewed open-access journals to enhance the dissemination of knowledge.
Research resources and supporting infrastructure shall be provided through the Research and Studies Center.

3. Freedom of Academic Expression

Faculty members have the right to express their professional opinions in the public sphere in their capacity as specialists.
Personal opinions expressed by faculty members outside their official duties shall not be considered official positions of the University.
Faculty members shall not face professional consequences due to their legitimate academic contributions.

4. Students’ Research Rights

Students shall have the right to engage in critical thinking, raise questions, and adopt academic positions supported by evidence.
Students shall not be penalized for research findings that differ from their supervisors’ expectations, provided that academic standards are met.

V. Boundaries and Responsibilities

Academic freedom entails corresponding responsibilities, including:
Commitment to the University’s approved Research Ethics Charter and requirements of academic integrity.
Respect for intellectual property rights and academic citation and documentation standards.
Full disclosure of conflicts of interest in research procedures.
Clear distinction between personal opinions and documented research findings.
Refraining from hate speech or offensive expressions toward individuals or groups.

VI. Protection Against Retaliation

Faculty members and students shall be protected from any pressure or administrative consequences resulting from their legitimate exercise of academic freedom.
The University shall provide clear mechanisms for reporting violations of academic freedom principles and addressing them within twenty-one (21) business days.

VII. Review and Updates

This policy shall be reviewed every two years with the participation of the Academic Affairs Council and representatives of faculty members.
