I. Purpose and Objectives

Midocean University is committed to supporting the sustainability of marine resources and minimizing the environmental impacts of waste through the implementation of sustainable waste management practices, reducing pollution, and promoting environmental awareness among the University community. This contributes to protecting marine ecosystems, preserving natural resources, and supporting Sustainable Development Goals.

II. Scope

This Policy applies to:

All buildings and facilities on the University campus.
All academic and administrative departments.
Laboratories and educational and research facilities.
All University meetings, events, and activities.
All faculty members, employees, and students, in addition to suppliers and contractors when providing services within the University.

III. Definitions

Marine Resources: Include seas, oceans, coastlines, living organisms, and associated natural resources that require protection from pollution and unsustainable exploitation.
Sustainable Waste Management: A set of measures aimed at reducing waste generation, reusing and recycling waste, and disposing of waste in safe and environmentally responsible ways, thereby minimizing its impact on the environment, particularly aquatic and marine environments.

IV. Core Policy Provisions

Reduce waste generation across all University facilities through the implementation of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling practices.
Ensure waste disposal in accordance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
Prevent any practices that may directly or indirectly contribute to the pollution of aquatic or marine resources.
Encourage the use of environmentally friendly and recyclable materials in University activities.
Promote environmental awareness among students, employees, and faculty members regarding the importance of protecting marine resources and reducing pollution.
Support community initiatives and activities related to marine environmental protection and beach clean-up whenever feasible.
Support research and student initiatives related to marine resource protection and the enhancement of environmental sustainability.
As an educational institution located in an island nation, the University is committed to participating in community initiatives aimed at protecting marine and coastal environments and encouraging students and the University community to engage in volunteer and research activities that contribute to preserving marine resources and reducing pollution.

V. Alignment with the Digital Learning Environment

Given the University’s reliance on an e-learning system, the following mechanisms shall be implemented:

Conduct electronic awareness campaigns on marine resource protection and sustainable waste management.
Incorporate environmental sustainability and marine resource topics into electronic awareness activities and programs.
Reduce the use of consumable materials through expanding virtual meetings and activities.
Publish waste segregation and recycling guidelines through the University’s digital platforms.
Reduce paper waste through reliance on electronic documents, signatures, and records.
Promote digital awareness regarding proper electronic waste management.

VI. Related Procedures

Implement waste segregation and recycling procedures across university facilities.
Ensure safe waste disposal in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Conduct awareness campaigns and environmental initiatives to support marine resource protection.
Monitor compliance with sustainable waste management practices and prepare periodic reports.

VII. Performance Indicators

Percentage of recycled waste compared with total waste generated.
Percentage reduction in electricity consumption compared with the previous year.
Percentage reduction in waste generation compared with the previous year.
Number of awareness campaigns and environmental initiatives implemented annually.
Number of activities or initiatives supporting marine resource protection.

VIII. Review and Updates

This Policy shall be reviewed annually, or as required, taking into consideration the results of the performance indicators, relevant environmental legislation, and feedback received from the University’s departments and other relevant stakeholders.
