I. Purpose and Objectives

The University is committed to reducing the use of single-use materials across all its facilities and activities. This is achieved by promoting reusable and recyclable alternatives, and embedding sustainable consumption practices into the University’s everyday operations, thereby contributing to waste reduction, the conservation of natural resources, and the advancement of environmental sustainability goals.

II. Scope

This policy applies to:

All buildings and facilities within the University campus.
All academic and administrative departments.
Cafeterias, canteens, and hospitality service areas.
All University meetings, events, conferences, celebrations, and activities.
All faculty members, staff, and students, as well as suppliers and contractors when delivering services on university premises.

III. Definitions

Single-Use Materials: Products designed for one-time use or intended to be discarded after a brief period, including disposable cups, plates, cutlery, packaging bags, and single-use containers. Such materials contribute significantly to waste generation when not replaced with more sustainable alternatives.

IV. Core Policy Provisions

Progressively reduce the procurement and use of single-use materials across all University facilities.
Prioritize reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable products whenever a need arises.
Encourage the use of personal reusable cups, bottles, and containers among the University community.
Minimize the use of single-use packaging and utensils at University meetings, events, and activities.
Encourage suppliers and contractors to provide environmentally friendly alternatives when delivering goods and services.
Raise awareness among university members regarding the environmental impact of single-use materials.
Monitor consumption of single-use materials on an ongoing basis and work toward its continuous reduction.

V. Alignment with the Digital Learning Environment

Given the University’s reliance on an e-learning system, the following mechanisms are applied:

Work toward an annual reduction in the use of single-use materials across campus operations.
Promote the use of reusable or recyclable products wherever practically feasible.
Prioritize sustainable and environmentally responsible products in all procurement decisions.
Restrict the use of single-use materials at University meetings, events, and activities except where strictly necessary.
Disseminate awareness among students, staff, and faculty regarding the environmental consequences of single-use materials and the importance of adopting sustainable alternatives.

VI. Associated Procedures

Apply single-use material reduction measures consistently across all University facilities.
Provide sustainable, reusable, or recyclable alternatives wherever possible.
Monitor single-use material consumption rates on a periodic basis.
Promote waste sorting and the recycling of all recyclable materials.

VII. Key Performance Indicators

Rate of reduction in single-use material consumption compared to the previous year.
Percentage of single-use materials successfully replaced with sustainable alternatives.
Number of awareness campaigns implemented annually.
Percentage of University events that adhere to single-use material reduction practices.

VIII. Review and Update

This policy is reviewed annually or as needed, taking into account key performance indicator outcomes, advancements in sustainability practices, and feedback received from University departments and relevant stakeholders.
